A teenager used a tin of beans during a sword fight to fend off an attacker at a corner shop.

Oliwier Gabis, 18, chose the British food staple as his weapon of choice despite carrying knives and machetes.

He can be seen hurling the tin to defend himself and his friend at MJ Food Store in Birmingham in January.

Footage shows an unknown man began running after Gabis and his friend while wielding a large blade.

While other customers ran for safety, Gabis handed his friend a machete from his bag while he went for the beans.

Prosecutor Will Dudley told Birmingham Crown Court: ‘As the defendant and his companion were leaving the shop they were approached, or ran after, by an unknown male and that unknown male was wielding a large machete.

‘What then ensued was little short of a sword fight between the unknown male and the defendant’s companion, while this defendant threw various items of groceries at the pair of them.

Teens locked up after weapons seized A group of teens have been locked up after we recovered a slam gun, live ammunition and knives following a pursuit in Birmingham. We seized the potentially lethal weapons after tracking a Ford Focus which failed to stop for officers in Lozells. Our teams - from traffic and firearms officers to the dog unit - helped bring the vehicle to a stop in Hanley Street, Aston, on 21 June last year. The occupants tried to flee but four teenagers were quickly arrested and a search of the car and nearby area led to four machetes, the improvised firearm, shotgun cartridge and gun parts being found. Rheese Dhoot, aged 19 from Saltley, pleaded guilty to possessing a prohibited firearm and bladed article. He was jailed for five years and six months at Birmingham Crown Court on Wednesday (10 April). Marko Catak, aged 19 from Hockley, admitted the same offences and was sentenced to five years. Makaya Russell, aged 18 from Erdington, also pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two years, suspended by 18 months, and 140 hours unpaid work. Oliwer Gabis, aged 18 from Handsworth, was convicted of three counts of possession of a bladed article, which included two separate incidents, and making threats with a knife. He was locked up for two years and one month. https://www.west-midlands.police.uk/news/teens-locked-after-weapons-seized Credit West Midlands Police

‘In the shop was a 13-year-old schoolboy who runs in fear and the shopkeeper himself literally cowered under the desk.’

Gabis asked his friend, who sustained an injury to his leg, to hide the knife until emergency services arrived.

He was convicted of three counts of possession of a bladed article and one offence making threats with a knife.

He was sentenced to two years and one month detention.
